Van Alstyne is a small city positioned in Grayson and Collin counties in northern Texas. Van Alstyne is located about 50 miles north of Dallas and 30 miles south of the Red River, separating Texas from the neighboring state Oklahoma. As of 2016, there are approximately 3,599 people living in Van Alstyne according to the United States Census Bureau.
Van Alstyne was formed in conjunction with the rapid railroad expansion into North Texas in the 1870s. Many residents of a nearby town known as Mantua relocated to Van Alstyne during this time, bringing with them churches and businesses. The City of Van Alstyne is named in honor of Maria Van Alstyne, the widow of Houston and Texas Central Railway stockholder William Ashley Van Alstyne. In 1890, Van Alstyne became an incorporated municipality.
Today, Van Alstyne is a well-developed city. It is home to many businesses and community facilities. The Van Alstyne Community Center is used to host local gatherings and serves many other purposes. Also located in the city is the Van Alstyne Historical Museum. The museum is supported by private donations and exhibits local artifacts and other items relevant to Van Alstyne. Parks and a senior center are found in Van Alstyne as well. Many residents of the city agree Van Alstyne provides all facilities and amenities necessary for an excellent quality of life.
Van Alstyne is located in a climate where temperatures vary greatly each season. During the summer seasons, daytime temperature highs will climb to the low-100s. High humidity levels are common as well. During the winter seasons, daytime temperature highs range from the mid to upper-50s on average. Snowfall is possible during the winter seasons in addition to freezing temperatures.
